FreeRange Communications acquired by Handmark

FreeRange Communications was acquired by Handmark in January 2009. FreeRange delivers media companies and content publishers branded, always on channels without the need to re-purpose or host additional infrastructure to deliver mobile content.
FreeRange Communications was created in 2004 because using the browser to get information on a mobile phone didn't work so well. It still doesn't work well enough (no offense to the wizardy of Apple's iPhone), and it's not likely to become really great for a very long time.
Why? The web is evolving to assume large screens that can run intensive graphics. Phone screens can't get much bigger than today's PDA screen sizes and still be termed a mobile device. That disparity means that viewing the web from mobile devices will always be forced - either forcing users to try to navigate a site designed for a 15" display on their mobile, or forcing web publishers to create limited content sites specifically for mobile devices.
Figuring out how to deliver dynamic content to the mobile screen in a way that users find engaging and compelling became our technology challenge. Giving content owners a way to harness that technology to automatically extend their content to mobile devices became our business.
Today, the Handmark FreeRange product powers mobile channels for major brands and channels around the world, including the Travelocity Business, The Wall Street Journal, Portland TrailBlazers, NewsGator, PaidContent and Fierce Publishing.
